I have 2200 kbits/sec on 320x240. AutoGK (windows) turns a two hour movie into a 1401 MB file with excellent quality and AC3 audio... with the same video codec, at a much higher resolution.
I have fiddled with all the controls and have been completely unable to find something satisfactory.
