Just to follow up on this if anyone else gets stuck with this. I'm pretty sure now that my problem was actually a driver issue with either my nVidia card or ivtv. I finally realized that I never recompiled ivtv after installing the latest kernel. As soon as I did that, the error below disappeared only to be replaced by the program totally locking up when starting up live TV. After reinstalling my nVidia driver, I was getting some errors involving XvMC (I think that's what it was called.)

So at this point, rather than deal with it anymore I opted for a clean install and now my system is functional again, although I lost all my data because Fedora didn't add JFS support back in during the install.

Subject: [mythtv-users] frontend crashes with St9bad_alloc

Hi all,

I had a perfectly working mythtv setup and when I recently ran apt-get
dist-upgrade I broke something (at least I think that is what did it.)
I'm running FC3 with a PVR-500 and installed using apt-get install
mythtv-suite. My capture card works fine, I can capture with cat
/dev/video0 > temp.mpg and play it back fine in mplayer. The preview view
also works in the Previously recorded window, and the backend seems to be
functional. However, any time I try to watch live TV or view a recording
I'm getting this:

2005-06-28 19:34:12.923 Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
2005-06-28 19:34:19.762 Opening audio device '/dev/dsp'.
2005-06-28 19:34:19.762 Opening OSS audio device '/dev/dsp'.
2005-06-28 19:34:19.780 Using XV port 122
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
 what():  St9bad_alloc
2005-06-28 19:34:20.131 Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None
Aborted
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mythtv-0.18.1]# Partial WriteStringList 0
2005-06-28 19:34:20.789 writing to unconnected socket #2

I really can't think of what else to try. I'm currently trying to compile
from the latest source thinking that might fix the problem but I'm
doubtful that it's going to do the trick.

Any help would be greatly apreciated so I can avoid a fresh install.

Thanks!
