You don't need lirc. As long as the remote mimics the keypresses of the keyboard, you'll be fine. I run this setup on all my frontends - an ir receiver with a keyboard close by, but tucked away. A programmable remote is the primary device. If you don't have a programmable remote (like the hauppauge grey) then you'll need two IR receivers.
