The OP just wanted to be able to capture a show every night and then loop it endlessly the next day. Scripting Myth is a good idea, but overkill for that problem.
If the front-end machine is just displaying video and nothing else, then he could skip the whole MythTV frontend (and X11 for that matter) and just have a cron job that retrieves the most recent capture and plays it with mplayer in endless-loop mode using the SVGA or FrameBuffer driver.
