Install dialog off your distro CDs and run the LIRC setup program. It's very straightforward after that and should get you up and running quickly. You may need also to create a udev rule to ensure the LIRC nodes are recreated for you at boot (you can search the list for this info). You need to make sure that your /etc/lircd.conf file is the correct one for your remote, and that you have a ~/.lircrc (and MythTV version) to make sure the remote is usable.
