I had my dual-athlon desktop, with a bttv card, as my master backend, and a p3-500 with 256M-RAM as a slave, also with a bttv.  While it worked for conflict resolution, I had to go to REALLY low quality recording on the p3 slave so it could process it, still using about 90% of the CPU.

Yesterday I received my shiny new PVR500-MCE, put it into the p3 in place of the bttv card.  Now with that system running as the master and serving up two simultaneous live channel feeds across the network, it's maxing at <25% utilization.  Geez, I guess I could put another PVR500 - or two - in there.
