In fact most DVRs nowadays, especially TiVo are Linux based. MS is just not robust enough - can you imagine a DVR that needs to be rebooted everyday?

By the way, speaking of GPL, what constitutes "changes to pre-existing GPL software"? If a company uses a GPL software like Myth, then replaces various modules for a different applications (say security), is that considered "changes" or "new code"?

The GPL says that they must release the sources for any changes made to
pre-existing GPL software.  They do not have to release the sources to
proprietary software they developed to run on top of a GPL'd operating
system.  That is a popular misconception that figures prominently in
Microsoft's FUD against Linux.



I know that...hence "NOT".  As a matter of fact I work for a company
that does exactly this.  I'm intimately familiar with what the GPL
does and does not allow.
