While the geek factor is admirably high, this probably wasn't a good way
to spend $100 if you really want to have CID available all the time.
I bought a *talking* Caller-ID box for less than that. Not only does it
annouce the incoming calls by number, it can also match certain numbers
and either announce them verbally (ie: payphones say "PAYPHONE" instead
of speaking the number) or actually pick up the phone and tell them to
go away ("The person you have dialed is not accepting your call.
Goodbye.") which is great for telemarketers - I have it programmed to
PFO any callers that block their CID. Even though I didn't build it
myself, the geek factor is still up there and the WAF is out of this
world.
And it works when the TV is off.
Yes, talking caller id does sound pretty cool.
But I think it might depend on your situation. I wouldn't hear something
like that in other rooms where I have myth frontends. But if I got bored
one day, I could write a little listener on windows to run the XML
broadcast through MS Agent. Or I could make a little listener on linux
to do the same thing through festival. Heck, I could even make it email
my phone or work every time somebody calls. And since I have 2 servers
running misc tasks around the house, I could have one of those speak all
the time. Geek factor is unlimited once you have something you can
already get at. That is why I would rather have something with unlimited
access for $100 rather than a device that only does what somebody else
told it to do. (my main reason for having mythtv in the first place)

P.S. If I were to ever do something like that, I would surely pass it along.
