Why not set it to the max your setup can handle? As I watch mine on an
LCD monitor, I have it set to 1280x1024. If you ever watch HD you'll
need something at least as good as 1080.
I've finally configured X to 100dpi and am slowly resolving the issues
to fixing the font size as well.
