Unless you need arts for a specific reason, it's normally a good idea
to disable it completely. Also, make sure you don't have specific
~/.asoundrc and /etc/asound.state files for your old card, which
likely uses difference device names and mixer controls.

To get round the volume problem, I normally set the mixer up as I want
it, then save it to a specific file, and then load it at startup (this
is incase the default file gets overwritten with bad mixer levels).
