Paul,

Just for clarification, can you point to any resources about the laws you mention below? I am moving to a new area, and if I have issues getting the firewire ports (unencrypted) it would be valuable to have some ammo :)

TIA

However, it's not up to them to provide you with
what you should legally receive - IEEE 1394 (firewire)
unencrypted from their box to your machine. In this
case, firewire from their HD cable box to your
mythbox.

It has nothing to do with being lucky. It has to do with
knowing what you are entitled to. In that sense, you
are their worst nightmare if they are unwilling to
comply with federal law.

Mediacom will never fix their noise problem - won't happen, so i have
to
deal with it.

I live in Ames, IA and *none* of the hardware they send out is
customized - so i would get lucky if they have firewire ports

So amplify it as soon as it gets into your house, before
any split occurs. I realize you're probably amplifying noise,
but at that point it may be wise to try and get the cable co.
to fix its problems.

Odds are you'll need a cable box. Depending on your
provider (where are you?), you may be able to get away
with being able to get away with no capture card - just
do everything via firewire!
