Probably better off copying the file (or, even better, moving the file
and chown'ing it since root doesn't need it) from root's home directory
to mythtv's.  No normal users should have access to any files in root's
home (or the directory itself).  This won't affect Myth directly, but is
a much cleaner approach overall.

root does need it if you ever start mythbackend by hand as root, hence
having one copy of mysql.txt in ~root/.mythtv/ with and the other one
in /.mythtv/ symlinked back to it. You only ever need maintain one
file then...
OK. If you're running user-level applications as root, letting users access root's home directory is a relatively small concern. ;)
