Hi,

I recently set up a mythTV backend using Ubuntu 5 AMD64, and it seems
to be working OK. Bit of background - the backend is in Canada. I am
on the other side of the world in Japan, and I want to be able to see
Canadian hockey and maybe some local programming.

The problem is that I can't use mythTV via the frontend (since I don't
have physical access to the machine) and I would like to manipulate it
via the command line if possible. I have mythweb set up, but it only
allows me to schedule recordings and not alter settings.

(Note - I DID set up a vnc server, and it worked when I was home
recently, but I can't get in now for some reason, so that isn't an
option.) Does anyone else do this kind of thing? I can't find any
information online about how mythtv is set up behind the scenes.

I had assumed that settings would be stored in some config files....
but I can't find any. ARE there config files or not? I have come to
the conclusion that all of the settings must be stored in a mySQL
database. Is that correct? I checked out the mythconverg database
using phpmyadmin last night, but don't yet have a good handle on it.

Specifically, I am trying to figure out how to change settings
concerned with commercial detection and deletion, automatic
transcoding after recording and perhaps video card settings. (I have a
Hauppauge PVR-150 and thought I read somewhere it could record
directly to MPEG4 rather than MPEG2.) Also, my aspect ration seems to
be off. The picture is tall, but narrow relative to a normal TV
screen. Can anyone tell me how to view and adjust these settings
without using mythtv-frontend?

Craig
