Thanks Kevin, I am embarrassed that I missed that.
If I understand things correctly, mythtv calls mythtranscode after it
finishes recording. I tried using mythtranscode from the command line
to see what is happening and it failed:

%mythtranscode -i 1058_20050921163000_20050921170000.nuv -f foo.avi

Stream: 0 Type: 0
Stream: 1 Type: 1
Input #0, mpeg, from '1058_20050921163000_20050921170000.nuv':
  Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg2video, 480x480, 29.97 fps, 6000 kb/s
  Stream #0.1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s
mythtranscode: mpeg2trans.cpp:668: bool
MPEG2trans::process_video(AVPacket*, bool): Assertion `0' failed.
Aborted

So perhaps my problems are with mythtranscode and NOT incorrect
settings. Any one have any idea on what this error message means and
how to fix it?
