I had similar issues when setting up my card yesterday. I soon discovered that the backend was dying because the buffer directory did not exist. Make sure your buffer directory exists and it is writable by your myth tv user.

I didn't think TVtime was able to support cards like the PVR-500. You might want to try something like xawtv instead.
