I started working on something similar using my touch screen. But what I'm doing instead of being ontop of the frontend is being around the outer edge. I'm cloning my TV out (running at 800x600) onto the touch screen/vga out (running at 1024x768) and writting an app that sits around the outer edge. This could have status displays, menu controls and bring up a virtual keyboard like xvkbd.
