It seems that when I pipe through gzip and bzip as you did, I don't see any reboots. However, when I access it normally, it reboots usually in less than a minute, and memory didn't seem to decrease terribly. However, behaviour I observed using an older version of ivtv DID act the way you're describing. Can you try the following two things and see if either gives you any different results?:
1. disable motherboard's on-board ethernet (saw this on the ivtv-devel)
2. use latest ivtv 0.3.9 drivers
Thanks,
Brian

I suspect a memory leak.
1.
I started mythfrontend as user and switched to any channel.
2.
CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a terminal. Logged in as root.
3.
# swapoff /dev/hda2
to get rid of any virtual memory. 'top' shows 0 Bytes of vm. Good. The
machine has 768 MB of "real" RAM.
4.
# watch --intervall=1 vmstat
The amount of free memory is permanently decreasing, starting at 300 MB.
At ~70 MB the machine does a sudden reboot.
Hm.
I started mythfrontend from commandline with -v all and a small geometry
(256x128), just to have room an the screen. See mythfrontend --help. I
get LOTS of output each second. Is that normal? I cut off a piece:

5.
This time tried "top" instead of "vmstat" in a different terminal
window. Also here I can see the amount of memory permanently shrink.
6.
This time I do NOT wait until the machine resets. I press ESC to leave
TV-mode an return to the main menu. BANG. The amount of free memory
raises up to the original value. Starting TV-mode again decreases
memory. Stopping TV mode gives me my RAM back.
Anyone can help? Brian, does this also happen on your machine?
Bye, Ratti
