Ok, when I try the symlink, it says /dev/lirc already exists. Any ideas? Removing the /dev/lirc and the doing the symlink goes through, but still when I start the frontend lirc locks.

I believe that something has changed with the lirc package, or the program itself. I had this problem when I did a dist-upgrade on my box, but creating the symlink given below made everything run smoothly again.

It is also possible to use udev itself (it creates the /dev entries)
to create a symlink between /dev/lirc0 and /dev/lirc. If you're
