You might check out the various pieces of hardware which are supported by
LCDproc (sourceforge).
I just bought a Matrix Orbital MX212 2-line USB LCD, and it works very
well. It's an internal device, but I'm sure you could knock up a
housing for it. Comes with a standard USB cable.
