This might have been caused by having /var, /, and your recordings being all on the same disk partition (i.e. everything is on the / partition).
I don't think many people partition this way anymore, but I like to have /var, /home, and anything else that might get filled up with data on a different partition from /. That way the system won't crash if the disk becomes full because / will still have some room to breath on its dedicated partition.
