How is the screen update speed (menus, OSD, etc) with a relatively
slow CPU like that?

The Roku is designed as a media player. It has an integrated HD
MPEG decoder, which lets it handle the video even with its 300MHz
MIPS CPU. It does not really the horsepower to do a lot of backend
functions - not to mention the lack of any storage or high speed
inputs for receivers.
But, it looks to be a pretty ideal platform for a front-end.
For me, a small / quiet / cheap front-end like the Roku means that
I could get away with using a big, loud, clunky beige box PC for
the backend with a few receiver cards and tons of disk. Stick it
in the basement, and view content over the network with the Roku.

The component

It has USB though. How 'bout a Plextor ConvertX for the tuner? Add a
hub and an external drive and you've got a near-complete BE/FE system.
How cool would that be? I don't own one yet, but I'm trying to
convince the wife that I _NEED_ it :)
Josh
its only usb 1.1, not fast enough for video capture
