The best price/performance remote controls I have found are the "JP1" remotes. JP1 refers to the header that is left on the remote, which is used for factory programming and has been reverse engineered to allow for customization of the
remote. They are sold under the Radio Shack name, or the "One for All"
remotes sold at other retailers. There are some Windows apps that allow
programming of the remote using a small cable from the PC to the remote.
The learning curve is a bit steep, but for an inexpensive option it's hard to beat. ( http://www.hifi-remote.com/forums/ ).

The Philips Pronto remotes are expensive, but offer complete flexibility. You can create custom display graphics, script complex functions, and learn/build
almost any IR command.

One that I am looking into now is the Philips RC9800i. It combines a
universal remote, limited multimedia support, and WiFi. It has some EPG
(electronic programming guide) support, but I don't know if that would work with MythTV. The possibilities with this device are certainly interesting..

Hi all, I've been reading through the archives looking for a suitable
remote control to replace the one I'm using now. The main reason is
that the current remote has such a small memory foot print. I'm
    using a
learning remote control with a wireless keyboard pickup. This works
great except that it can only learn about 8 keys before running
    out of
memory. So what kind of remote controls are you guys using that
    learns
enough to have full numeric and directional control. I've thought
    about
going the lirc route, but I use a lot of myths functionality, games,
video, dvd, etc. Getting lirc to work seemlessly with all those
    options
(seperate programs) doesn't quite work. I'd like to stay with
    keyboard
inputs. To that end, I've even considered writing a keyboard driver
that can listen on the serial port for data to transmit directly
    to the
lower levels of the console, hadn't looked in to it too deep, but
    sounds
    feasible. Ideas?

    Thanks,
    Calvin...

Hate to follow up my own post, but is there an actual remote control that comes with a pickup that has a ps/2 connection?
