My brother has been using SATAs successfully with myth for about a year now. It 
might be worthwhile to try a new mobo first.

Trouble is, a new mobo is about the same price as a big IDE drive, and much harder to fit. Plus, unless I want to buy a new CPU (I have an 2.2 AMD Sempron, most MBs for it will be older design, and may have the same SATA problems.

An IDE drive is likely to be an easier and cheaper solution.
