Try doing sudo chmod +s `which mythfrontend`
You'll need the root password. That should give mythfrontend SUID permissions and you ought to be able to run realtime thread. I'm not convinced that this is the whole solution though. If the thread gets behind, the audio should not go all chirpy which is the symptom I'm seeing.
