I don't think I would ever run an LVM setup without RAID underneath, for
that very reason.

Might want to check out http://evms.sourceforge.net/ -- EVMS is the
Enterprise Volume Management System for Linux, it purports to make
configuring and managing RAID and LVM/LVM2 a lot easier.
