mythtv-setup isn't very helpful there.
Take a look at the mythshutdown program in current svn. It connects to
the server and returns status information that sounds like what you're
looking for. I noticed it a bit after I posted yesterday. It was added
only recently so you won't see it in any packaged distributions.
