I spent a chunk of a rainy Saturday just reading threads in the mythtv archive and learnt a LOT... even though some of it was old stuff, now obsoleted by changes to the drivers, it gave a structural framework for how things are supposed to work, and lots of hints about where to go to tinker with stuff that doesn't quite work (such as the message logs, dmesg, udev rules etc...).
