I observed some memory leaks in the ScheduledRecording class last spring but couldn't find the source. There was a fix in that area since then but I don't remember when. Post 0.18 for sure. Anyway, the first thing I'd look at is memory. A ps -F -C mythbackend in a hourly or daily cron job directed to some log file would confirm or eliminate this angle.
