Positioning problems are more properly fixed by altering the modeline timings to reduce the retrace delay.
Actually, they're more properly fixed by adjusting the monitor/TV so it doesn't overscan. Twiddling modelines is band-aiding a broken situation. Horiz direction easy to adjust. Vert direction abuses the standard (e.g. 480 lines scaled to 465 lines instead of 480 properly displayed on the monitor).
