I should have been more clear.  I *can* transcode, but only using the 
built-in support to go from NUV to NUV (for removing commercials or 
editing content).  What I *can't* do is export to other formats such as 
VCD.  I used to be able to do this without installing MythDVD (my box 
doesn't have a DVD drive and I don't use it as a front-end anyway).  I 
think the problem is that nuvexport relies on other packages that 
Debian tends to break or not include because of their no-patents 
policy.  I've found alternate sources for ffmpeg, liblame0 and 
mjpegtools but apparently haven't found a set that will talk to each 
other and work with the other Debian packages.  It would be REALLY NICE 
if the MythTV packagers (dijkstra et al) would include those 
dependencies that Debian sites refuse to carry so we could download 
matched sets.
