IMHO, upgrading a PC by buying a new processor is a waste of money, so I buy based on cost today and use the money I save to buy a whole new system in the future. I guess that explains why I have 10 computers and one laptop in my house (technically, 2 laptops, but one of them is parts now). Although, I should admit, there might be other reasons for all those computers, too...

Well if I understand correctly (and I may well not) socket 939 does present a very specific upgrade path, in that it supports the dual-core athlons which are currently very very expensive but may one day get cheaper.
