This has started happening to me too. I use mplayer to play videos, and I think there was an update for that recently (at least for Fedora 4, which I use).
I find if I play some live tv, or a recording of live TV, the sound comes back, and I can watch my xvid stuff. When I have some time, I might try switching to xine, see if that helps.
