I really want to try the svn version, but I have run out of ideas for

I would try:
1. check out the latest svn
2. run 'make distclean'
3. run ./configure with no options (if you're sticking with svn you
might as well let it install into /usr/local so you don't have to
constantly change the prefix)
3. run 'make
IOW: 'make distclean; ./configure; make'
