It sends a string out to all clients registered with the LIRC daemon when using native LIRC support. If you don't use native LIRC support (i.e. you like doing things the hard way and love making problems for yourself), you use irxevent to send X keyboard events to Myth (i.e. it "emulates" a keyboard).
