I bought a Seagate 7200.8 based on reviews of the 7200.7 (at the time)

quiet spin but is let down by the seek noise. I had to move it out of
my Shuttle in the living room and into a separate box upstairs...

Did see those, thanks (everyone)

The trouble is, the results seem to very pretty wildly from site to site.

I hear (unofficially) that Seagate has AAM disabled and instead routes
that functionality through something more obscure (due to a lawsuit
supposedly?)

If that's the case, I'd probably rather go WD, even though it seems to
score worse on average.
