i have the following situation. aplay, alsaplayer, xine and mplayer all work. mythtv no longer complains about the audio, but i still do not get any sound. i have the remote frontend using ALSA:mixed-analog
as  the output device and mixed-analog for the mixer.

Use "default" for the mixer (no quotes, and technically, don't prefix it with "ALSA:" although it will work even if you do).
