Anyway, thanks for the official word.  I've been wanting to use
nuvexport since last spring, but it hasn't worked with the latest
ffmpeg.  I'll be happy to use transcode, but even though I've used
mythtv for 2 years now I've never used the --transcode flag with
nuvexport.  Is it simply "nuvexport --transcode"?  What's the
differences and why do you say it's better anyway?

yeah.  --transcode, or just set it up in the nuvexportrc file.

The difference is that it runs transcode instead of ffmpeg. Different encoder, different quality. For whatever reason, ffmpeg is faster at encoding mpeg1/mpeg2 data (ffmpeg is no faster for xvid/divx), but transcode looks FAR nicer when it comes to xvid stuff (fewer artifacts, etc).
