Mike, that's certainly a great idea as nvram-wakeup is not supported on
my ASUS K8 motherboard at all! However, after some quick tests it looks
like my machine does not wake up :-| Any idea?

Have you enabled wakeup alarm (RTC) in the bios, it will be called
something else I suspect.
Have you enabled ACPI, disable APM just for sure
also you might just try setting this in the bios first and see if the
bios will wake it up
what version and distro are you using.
