That's not necessarily true.
Raw disk (Slower machine, but same disk):
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1096 MB in 2.01 seconds = 545.09 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 178 MB in 3.01 seconds = 59.13 MB/sec
RAID5:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 2108 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1052.06 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 202 MB in 3.04 seconds = 66.37 MB/sec
This is in a 8 disk (200Gb Barracuda IVs) hptmv SATA RAID5, which I believe
MAY (despite what the FAQ says) be semi-hardware RAID.
