Matt, The Linux Network Administrators Guide pioneered OpenSource book publication. The first edition was published both online by the Linux Documentation Project and was published in print by O'Reilly. When I did the 2nd edition we published it under the GNU Free Documentation License. I agree wholeheartedly that a published free book is the right way to approach it.
