Well, I found a solution. In the mixer, along with the other mixer settings, AC97 needs to be set to 0 and AC97 capture needs to have the volume up.

So I have an hd-3000 card and a cable connecting the audio out of the card to the audio in of my SB live sound card. From the documentation, I gather that I'm supposed have the following settings:

Line is muted and captur is enabled
PCM is at a high volume
Master is at a high volume
Capture is muted, at a high volume, and captur is enabled

Yet when I do all of this I still cannot hear any sound. If I simply un-mute the line in, then i will here the non-synced live-tv sound that doesn't correspond with the video. I've read some people say that Line must also be at zero volume, but changing it's volume has no effect. ALSA is enabled and I've set my audio output device to ALSA:default in the general setup of the frontend. I've also unchecked the box that says "use internal volume controls" so that it is using an external mixer. I have also tried this using the internal volume controls and using /dev/dsp as my audio output device. None of these changes have any effects.

tvtime has no sound (unless I un-mute the line-in)
aplay /dev/dsp results in a few underruns but eventually they die out--no sound however.

Everyone else seems to be able to solve this problem so easily, what is going on here!?!
