I've been using the Internal player for playing back xvid's and notice that the aspect ratio is forced to 16:9 making the image look wrong. Is there a way to get the Internal player to use 1:1 instead so that it displays with

Don't you mean 4:3, not 1:1? Also, what kind of display are you using? Is it a widescreen TV, or is it something like a computer monitor? Also, does the XviD file happen to have an erroneous aspect ratio coded into it (MPlayer can do those things)? Does this happen with other files? Does this happen only with XviD encoded files?

This might not be a proper solution, but try remuxing the file as a Matroska file, and tell it to use the 4:3 aspect ratio on the video track. Maybe MPlayer will read that and display it properly.

thanks!
