On second thought, I realized that Ian's shell script won't help me in my particular desire to find channels Zap2It doesn't know about. This is because the cable box, when tuned to a nonexistent channel, won't change channels. The script has no way of knowing this and thus thinks the "new" channel is working (Because, after all, the MPEG-2 signal is still coming over, right?).
