Most of the bad comments I've heard from people about ATI cards were from those trying to do HD. The ATI drivers really have no support for some of the hardware features of their card under Linux, which is why you often hear people say you should use Nvidia instead of ATI for Linux. But that's only true if you need top performance, as you would if you wanted to display HD content.
