Thanks for your help on this one. I've decided to switch to an older motherboard I have, and that fixed (nearly) everything. I found (on this list and others) that I'm not the only one to have had problems getting alsa to work right on the Asus K8N-E deluxe, and unless anyone out there can contradict me, I'd recommend to everyone to stay away from that board for now. My audio problems may stem from the fact that my kernel and alsa drivers weren't up to date. Unfortunately, when I update my kernel (via yum upgrade), everything stops working, and I get the error:

So you may not have a problem if you use a SATA drive, but I can't say for sure on this.
