Bruce Dunn confirmed that the question is solved:
My error about the version - the machine is a laptop which had an in-
place update from version 10.x.  I thought it was at 12:10, but I just
checked and it is only at 12:04.  Consistent with this, MyUnity is
available from the software center on the 12:04 laptop, but not from the
software center of another machine of mine which runs 12:10.

If MyUnity doesn't touch the global menus, then the problem is is like a
coincidence.  Time to start over with a new installation anyway!
