Apparently the answer is: Nagios 1.x: No. Freshness checks are always made when freshness_threshold is reached. Nagios 2.x: Yes. Freshness checks are only made during the check_period. I vastly prefer the 2.x way of doing it. Sadly, we still use 1.x and will continue to do so for sometime yet.
