If you have found nagios and the mailinglist you must have seen there is a a documentation section as well on the website. (http://www.nagios.org/docs/) I suggest you start by reading the fine manual and then get back with specific questions if the manual is not clear and a simple google search can not help you find the answer either. If you need someone to help you through all the stages there is also a section about companies offering consultancy on installing nagios and implementing it in your network. But I guess as an engineer you will just sit down and read the manual for yourself first and start to post smart questions with the proper detail level if you find you're stuck somewhere.
