You could use this FAQ for the 1.x status.log as a guide. There have been a number of changes but it's a good start -- http://www.nagios.org/faqs/viewfaq.php?faq_id=66 The current_state codes are the plugin exit codes -- 0 OK 1 WARNING 2 CRITICAL 3 UNKNOWN (http://nagiosplug.sourceforge.net/developer-guidelines.html). Everything else looks pretty straightforward or directly from the host/service definitions.
