Debian Sarge was released as "stable" in June 2005, way before Nagios 2.0. It is Debian's release policy to only touch a stable release for security related or other bad bugs. Under no circumstances will a software version be updated in Debian stable. That being said, nagios2 builds fine on Debian sarge, and you can even backport the nagios2 packages from the development versions. We haven't packaged nagios 2.1 yet, and the mysql interface is gone.
